The community of Akron, Ohio, is mourning the tragic loss of James ‘Jimmy’ Mashburn, a beloved intervention specialist, football coach, and devoted family man, who passed away at the age of 32.
Jimmy died in a car accident when his pickup truck collided with the rear of a semi-truck on I-77. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:30 a.m., according to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Born in 1992, Jimmy graduated from Coventry High School in 2010 and later pursued his passion for education at Stark State College and the University of Akron. He earned his Bachelor of Education degree in 2018 and dedicated his career to supporting and mentoring students as an intervention specialist.
Jimmy’s professional journey reflected his unwavering commitment to his students. He most recently worked at Stow-Munroe Falls High School as an intervention specialist, a role he took on in August 2022. Before this, he served in a similar capacity at Green Local Schools, where he also coached football for five successful seasons. As a coach and mentor, Jimmy’s impact on his students and athletes went far beyond the classroom and the field.

Jimmy’s colleagues and community members remember him as a cherished member of the Bulldog and Green Local Schools communities. Stow High School Principal Amanda Murray shared, “His passion for mentoring students went far beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on students, players, colleagues, and all who knew him.”

Beyond his professional life, Jimmy was a loving husband to April Lynn and a devoted father to their two children. He was admired for his kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his family, friends, and community.
Jimmy’s passing has left a profound void in the lives of his loved ones, friends, colleagues, and students. The Stow-Munroe Falls City School District has made counseling services available to support those affected by this loss.
As the Akron community grieves, they also celebrate Jimmy’s extraordinary legacy of love, mentorship, and leadership. His dedication to education and his remarkable ability to inspire those around him will never be forgotten.
